In OSPF, Which address will be a "Forward Address" if there's no loopback configured ?

author

It's too much confusion when it comes to the selection of forward address.

I know the restrictions & requirements to choose any address as a forward address.

Most of the document says,

1. It will choose highest ip address on any loopback

2. if no loopback configured then choose highest ip address of any physical interface (which satisfy the condition to become a forward address)

Is this right ??

Coz I performed practical and that is not right......It's taking latest configured ip address (in same NSSA Area) as a forward address regardless of highest number.

One more thing,

i went through the book "Troubleshooting IP Routing Protocols (CCIE® Professional Development)"

it says that "If no loopback addresses are configured, use the address of the first interface in that area."

What it means ??

Plz explain

As per cisco

Forwarding address is selected on ASBR using the following rules:

If there is a loopback configured in the area then IP address of loopback is selected as forwarding address.

If first condition is not met then IP address of first interface on the OSPF interface list is selected as forwarding address. You can see OSPF interface list by using "show ip ospf interface brief" command. The interface on top will be the last interface which was attached to OSPF.
