We do not calculate subnet-mask, we provide it for the ip device. Think of a subnet-mask as a veil or window which can be pulled to cover or expose whatever needs to be shown and how big it is. In this case, what we want to expose or cutoff is the network address of a fixed 4 bytes length addresses of devices so that the remaining length values can be used to uniquely tag devices. The only calculation we do is to imagine how many devices we will want to accommodate so that the subnet-mask can be extended or shortened accordingly...
