Connection to and from ISP WAN and LAN. Analog or digital?

Is the connection from the WAN to a LAN analog or digital? I thought it was analog, hence the need for a modem to translate the digital from the LAN into analog for the WAN and then back to digital. If this is the case, why is a csu/dsu needed to connect digital signals if the signal is analog?
